MTM BAKONY NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM

8420 Zirc, Rákóczi tér 1., Rákóczi tér 3-5.

The Bakony Natural History Museum of the Hungarian Natural History Museum was established in 1972 in Zirc as the only natural history museum of Hungary.

The knowledge and collection material of decades of research and collecting offered a chance of a permanent exhibition presenting the natural assets of Bakony. The exhibition is in the building of the Cistercian Abbey of Zirc. Dioramas reveal the bioceonosis and nature reserves of the Bakony to the visitors. The mineral exhibition offers a wonderful selection of the rarities of the Carpathian Basin and the trophy exhibition presents not only the wild animals of Bakony but also of distant regions. Unique in Hungary, here you can see the skeleton of two mammoths which offers a special experience together with the contemporary ice age giants.

The institution organises several temporary and travelling exhibitions, holds open-air school and museum education activities and is responsible for the professional coordination of the Bakony Research of more than fifty years.

The museum has received the Pro Natura Award in 2002 and the certificate of merit of Zirc in 2009. It was awarded certificate of merit by the judging committee of the Museum of the Year competition.
